    • According to the 1723 Virginia Tobacco Lists, brothers Henry and Gabriel Moffett were living in the household of Lewis Reno in 1723 in Dettingen Parish. Frank Moffett wrote the following based on his research of these tobacco lists: "This was a census which was taken to allocate the number of tobacco plants which each male would be allowed to plant, as there was a tobacco glut, and the price was suffering. Sort of a colonial version of FDR's "Land Bank" program, wherein farmers were paid not to grow crops, etc. The brothers Henry (sometimes recorded as Heinrich) Moffett and Gabriel were listed in the household of Lewis Reno, a Huguenot, along with Reno sons, in Dettingen Parish, the location of which is now in Prince William County (then Stafford County).

    Notes
    • According to records from the old Threadneedle Street Walloon French Huguenot church in London England, my Moffett family records begin with Jean Baptiste Muffett, born 9 March 1679 in Bohain, Ainse, a town north and a short distance east of Paris, France near the Belgium border. On April 29, 1706 in London England, he married Francoise Duprez, born 1683 in Il Le Re, France. They had a son, Gabriel Moffett born 16 October 1709 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Gabriel enlisted as a soldier in the French and Indian
War, after leaving a Will of instructions upon his death, he
left the homestead to battle. He was killed and scalped by
the Indians near the Fort Duquesne, Pennsylvania. Gabriel,
Sr. died on March 20, 1758 and is buried in Frederick,
Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, VA . Mary had
previously died in Prince William County, VA., on May 26,
      1756.

"It was a time of War for Gabriel Moffett, Sr. He was
soon to leave and join the forces to fight the French and
Indians. His destination was near Fort Dushane in the
Pennsylvania Province of his Majesty's Territory. At this
time Gabriel, Sr. was the Sheriff of Prince William County
in Virginia. As he weighed the risks involved, Gabriel
protected his family the last way that he knew to do, by
providing his last will and testament before his departure.

It would be destiny that he did so, for he never
returned to his beloved family. He died in the French and
      Indian War."

A Gabriel Muffett of Prince William County was apprenticed to Lynaugh Helm, beginning on 5 September 1763. His father (deceased) was George Muffett. [Dettingen Parish Vestry Book, 1745-1785, pg. 38] He is believed to have been the Gabriel Mufett who was deeded 346 acres in the Parish of Dettingen by Maurice Lynaugh. [Shenandoah Families-Helm by Bessie Taul Conkwright]
(this was likely Gabriel's son rather than George. When Gabriel died, he left his minor children in the care of his brothers-in-laws, Lynaugh and Leonard)

Frederick Co. VA Deed Book #12, page 487, Aug 5, 1768 - John Madden grants power of attorney to John Moffatt of Fauquier Co to lease 123 acres in Prince William County, this land granted by Leonard Helm (patent Jan 15, 1726). (relationship of John Moffatt not known)
